Case Study: 5-Axis Drilling on a Curved Surface
A client in the telecommunications industry required a high-precision shield disc with a complex, non-planar (arched) surface. The primary challenge was to drill a series of perfectly perpendicular holes on this curved profile, a task impossible for standard 3-axis machines without multiple, complex setups which would compromise accuracy.
Our solution involved leveraging our advanced 5-axis simultaneous machining capabilities. By programming a precise toolpath that constantly adjusted the tool’s angle to remain normal to the part’s surface, we were able to drill each hole with exceptional accuracy and perpendicularity in a single setup. This not only guaranteed the critical geometric tolerances but also significantly improved production efficiency.
The result was a perfectly manufactured component that met the client’s stringent requirements for fit, function, and signal integrity, demonstrating our ability to solve the most complex manufacturing challenges.
